GREEN LIGHT MORNING (WAITING FOR A SIGN)

A perfect morning for a walk outside
The sun is shining and you look so beautiful
A little break from our imperfect life
Two kids are kissing while they’re waiting for a sign

street light
Waiting for a sign
green light
Waiting for a sign

The perfect morning
The green light morning
The perfect morning, now

A little girl on a hot pink bike
I start to laugh and her mama smiles at me
Guy drinking coffee with his boy at his side
Says “take it easy now, we’re waiting for a sign”

Street light
Waiting for a sign
Green light
Waiting for a sign

It’s the perfect morning
The green light morning
The perfect morning, now

Hold while we’re walking, please
You never know when there’s days like these
When all is perfect, yes, but take a look at the tree
At the tree
At the tree

Old couple fighting while dressed to the nines
He thinks, suddenly looking at her
you’re so beautiful
green light
you’re so beautiful
perfect
waiting for a sign

it’s the perfect morning
the green light morning
the perfect morning now

Waiting for a sign
Waiting for a sign…

LITTLE LAMBS, REGULAR GUYS

Look at me, 23
Everything I wanna be
A master of all I see
Disaster; are you lookin’ at me?
I asked her
Then I crossed the street

Drunk, blind, out of mind
Picked me up some overtime
Pay me everything I’m owed
Pay me, even though we know
I didn’t earn the time this week

If you see me walking by,
I’m a regular guy
If I can’t go where I want
I’ll be a bullet exploding in the sun

Black, brown foreign sounds
Coming from the border towns; crazy!
Is everyone there lazy?
What do they see but dollars meant for folks like me?

At 64, can’t take no more
Barricade the hotel door
Hear me; while they’re running away
They fear me
And I’ll be spending my last day cheering;
Now they know my name

If you see me walking by,
I’m a regular guy
If I can’t go where I want
I’ll be a bullet exploding in the sun

Look at me! Look at me! Look at me!

If you see me walking by,
I’m a regular guy
If I can’t go where I want
I’m like a bullet exploding in the sun
In the sun…in the sun…in the sun

MARCHERS

I don’t just talk to anyone
You seem special
Read all the literature
We write about us
All disagree,
all want to be
all powerful
all beautiful

Pretty soon the dam’ll burst
Because it’s only getting worse
You wanna put your people first
And then you hear ‘em saying

“we’re all marching on”

Whispers become shouts
Shouts become actions
Actions become a mob smiling in distraction
All of us disagree,
all of us want to be
all powerful
all beautiful

It only feels weird at first
Until you see the dam burst
You’re gonna laugh ‘til it hurts
And then you’ll hear us coming

We’re all marching on

All of us disagree
All of us want to be
All powerful
All beautiful

You’re gonna laugh ‘til it hurts
If you don’t get the joke first
It always starts with a curse
And they won’t hear us coming

We’re all marching on

WALK IN THE SUN

What a world
It’s a dangerous time to be alive
(you were lucky; you were strong)

Do you hear them talk?
I hear them whining endlessly
(not good looking; not too bright)
But I’ve got something in me

Read the news today
You’ll see the father through his son
And all that PC stuff don’t bother
Watch the smoke curl towards the sun
As it drifts out from my gun
I’m gonna walk in the sun

I’ll walk in the sun

You should thank me;
Like a doctor, I’ll be there
(to cure the cancer, in somebody’s name)

When no one has the guts to stand, is there a savior?
(no one answers; no one sane)
But I’ve got love inside me

Watch the news today
I’ll sign my name across the sun
And all that “feeling” crap?
Don’t bother
Here, they stumble while they run
In a battle I’ve begun
You’re gonna know who I am

The news today
I’ll sign my name across the sun
And all that high school crap don’t bother
When the bullets leave my gun
And my glorious day is done
I’m gonna walk in the sun
I’ll walk in the sun

LEAVES ON THE GROUND

Look in the sky
It’s the job of the balloon to float off far out of sight
And she’ll cry ‘til she forgets
But we know
There are more balloons, more autumn days
All the time we could need
We made that up anyway

Hear the boy with the nervous sound,
with his family all around
who carries the words that slip past time
See the girl in her summer clothes
Holding stories she’ll come to know
Balloon once held tight all break free

Leaves on the ground…

See them weightless, see they’re floating free
Completely unbound
Hear the sirens sing like trumpets
Saying “we’re home;
Our time is done”

Look around to see
All clear and clean
Just like you and me, we fall
Back to everything

I was a boy with a nervous sound
With my family all around
A summer long past, and far away
All the girls in their summer clothes
Holding secrets I couldn’t know
The hand let’s go
And we lift away

Leaves on the ground

All our time is done
All our time is done

BEAUTY IN THE BROKEN PLACE

Hello, everyone
We don’t need introduction
We are here
We are all beauty
in a broken place

I got one thing right:
it’s the laughs we remember;
That, and love,
Is all we’re left;
there’s beauty in the broken place

There’s too much here to know
And anyone who tries to tell me
Is a fool,
But so am I;
there’s beauty in the broken place

I believe in love when I’m looking
And I believe in love when it’s dark
And I believe in love because I see you
And I can feel you when life gets too hard

Hello, hello?
Please someone hear me
You have to know
You’re not alone
It’s beauty in a broken place
There’s beauty in the broken place
There’s beauty in the broken place
Beauty in the broken place

Hello
Hello

IT’S HAPPENING AGAIN

…and I’ve been waiting for all the signs
I’ve been watching all of this time

It’s happening again
It’s happening again

See distortion soak the corners where few of us really look
Start to smile, call them liars,
Slowly foul the holy book

We’ve learned nothing
And stack it in heaps
That’s what shakes me from my sleep

It’s happening again

NOTHING CHANGES (SAME OLD SUN)

Grandma fled from Warsaw 1939
Lost her family, almost died in a mine
Survived it all to go back home,
Where neighbors she had always known
Had stolen everything they’d ever had so she had to run
She finally got here
In ‘51
Under the light of the same old sun

Sophie’s broken heart was rarely on display
I only saw it once, at the end of a holiday;
A shadow fell across her face
And suddenly I was out of place
And she was far away with a golden-haired boy
That they’d taken in the war
A smiling picture of her first son
Fading from the light of the same old sun

Doesn’t it seem to go so fast?
The “future” now just confusing past
I know it feels like all it lasts
Is just one day;
But what a day…

Tears and triumphs and broken hearts
Haunt me every day
I know I talk too much
Still I can’t find words to say
There’s a million stories just like these
I’ve heard your god say “children, please!
All of you loudly saying my name; you don’t speak for me
So much fighting, and nothing won
Don’t look to me for what you’ve done
‘cos I see everything”

Nothing changes, and you’re all stunned
Under the light
Eternal light
Under the light of the same old sun
The same old sun

WE TOLD YOU

Remember you said it wasn’t Berlin in ’38?
Remember how you read about the Dachau gate?
that it wouldn’t happen anymore?

No institutions will save you now;
It’ll be your own nation to betray you now;
Because we’ve seen this all before

We told you
We told you

You might not like it but you know we’re right
Every so often the world loses light
But don’t be fooled, don’t lose sight
Of course the first ones aren’t too bright, but
The smart ones use them to start the fight
Then out come the knives and the broken night
And it’s pounding on the door

The safety and innocence were all a lie
Friends peel off when the heat gets high
So pack what you can carry and don’t say goodbye
Because it ends in chaos on the floor

We told you

WHERE DID I GO WRONG?

How can you clean up covered in blood?
How can you see the world as it was
Before this?

What kind of singing will we do in the dark?
When is Superman coming
To save us from us?

Gee, it takes so long;
Where did I go wrong?
Huh?

There was a dream
There was a beautiful dream
Were we deceived
Or we simply forget who we were?
I want to scream the loudest,
Longest scream
Need to shake the scales from the eyes of the world

But it takes so long;
Where did I go wrong?
Huh?

See, it takes so long;
Where did I go wrong?
Where did we go wrong?

MAN ON THE SCENE

I can’t take this pounding in my heart
It’s gonna break and then I’ll rip right apart
But I gotta keep it straight and clean
And I can’t afford to lose my job on Saturday
Saying “everything’s ok”
Explaining all this mess today,
on everybody’s screen

I’m the man on the scene

Get a good shot
Make sure that you got all my compassion
(I’ve been practicing that a lot)
If you can’t believe what’s on your tv
Well, imagine how it feels to be me here today
Putting our ignorance on display
Well, that’s my job this Saturday
Talking ‘til you’re green

I’m the man on the scene

All day! Special!
Breaking now!
Stay… tuned!

Can’t let it show but I can’t take anymore
Well there’s too much laying broken on the sanctuary floor
But I, I gotta keep myself straight and clean
Because everybody’s got a job to do today
Mine’s saying everything’s ok
While showing how we lost our way
On your TV screen

I’m the man on the scene
I’m the man on the scene

STAND

Brothers
Stand and be counted
Brothers
Stand up for me

It’s a matter of love now
It’s a matter of love now
Together we’re free

Stand!

Sisters,
You better take the wheel
Brothers
This is for real
Everyone
Our ride is here

This is the time now
This is the time now
Together we’re free

Stand!

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere

We hold these truths to be self-evident;
That all are created equal,
And are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights

We the people
In order to form a more perfect union
Pledge allegiance
To one nation
Indivisible
With liberty
And justice for all

People
I always stood up for you
People,
won’t you stand for me?

We’re going to run out of time now
We’re going to run out of time now
We’re going to run out of time…

(the congregation will please rise…)

HAT OF RAIN

I remember walking in in bright sunshine
I remember us laughing hard at the worst time
Oh no, no, no – all of our plans
Oh no, no, no, give me your hand

In the coming dark it’s clear:
It’s all been catch-and-throw,
Everything’s left owed,
Endlessly it goes

It’s a hat of rain,
It’s a hat of rain

Look across the crowded street
All running hard now
She’s struggling to find her feet;
You’d better sit down now
Come around,
Come now
Tell us your name

In the fading light I see
All this catch-and-throw,
The dull edge of the flow

It’s a hat of rain
It’s a hat of rain
It’s a hat of rain

Remember me
Remember me

Hat of rain

THE SUNSETS IN THE WEST

The fire season, choking the sky
The wind has shifted
There’s smoke blowing out to the sea
And in the evening, the cool of the day
The light deepens, the colors reveal themselves

Here it comes
blood red sun
Bathing the hills in an orange glow
Under purple clouds
High in the air
Hovering over the shore
Sunsets in the west

Heading west on the 118
A mind wanders into an everyday dream
See the smiles, people to love
See the lights start to fade
See it saying goodbye

Blood red sun
Here it comes
Admiring the view
With our backs to the wall
When the light glares through
Smoke and ash
It’s just like leaves in the fall
Sunsets in the west

When glass breaks it catches the light
And when hearts break
The songs are so sad and so sweet
And when the evening turns into night,
what is unleashed when the last light slips from the sea?

There it goes,
blood red sun
A shadow grows deeper in the dying light
See it swallow our illusions and dreams
‘til all is dark and unreal;

The sunsets in the west
The sun sets in the west
